1. How do I get to your country home from Kota
Kinabalu?
The most reliable
and enjoyable travel method is by taxi or self-drive car. We can help
you arrasnge for either transport option at local rates. Plan to leave
early morning (before 7 a.m. if possible) for spectacular mountain
views along the way.
Alternatively, you can travel by long
distance bus. Take a taxi to the bus terminal in Inanam (just outside
Kota Kinabalu) and look for buses going from KK to Ranau. Ask the
driver to let you off at the town of Kundasang, about 7km past Mount
Kinabalu National Park HQ. If pre-arranged we will meet you at the
clearly visible Alliance Bank building for transfer to our home.
Chartered helicopter is also possible but
very expensive.
2. Do you require a minimum stay?
We require a minimum stay of two (2) nights during the normal
season and a minimum stay of three (3) nights during public holidays
(New Year, Chinese New Year, Easter, Hari Raya and Christmas). A
deposit equal to one night will confirm your booking. We accept payment
in cash (Malaysian Ringgit and/or major international currencies),
travelers cheques, bank transfer, or through PayPal.
3. What is the weather like?
Our country home is siuated at about 1,700 meters (5,500 feet)
above sea level; at this altitude you can experience early morning
temperatures of 8 - 10 degrees C (46 - 50 F) and day time temperatures
from 18 - 28 degrees C (65-82 F). As in all mountain regions, the
weather can change rapidly, without much warninig. A long sleeve shirt
or a light sweater and long trousers will keep you warm in the evening.
Bring a hat, sunglasses, and suntan lotion. Wear comfortable walking
shoes. A windbreaker will provide added comfort.
5. Are there any mosquitoes and other creepy things?
Mosquitoes are very rare, but bring an anti-bug repellant.
Depending on the season, you may encounter flies, moths, gnats,
fireflies, and butterflies, and other no see'ums (none of them edible -
see next question). Spiders? Snakes? Centipedes? Yes, several species.
Chances are you will never see any of them.
6. Do you eat bugs and ants?
Bugs and ants are not on our menu. We take great delight in
preparing a wide variety of popular international and local
specialties. See the Cuisine and Culinary Education page for more info
and pictures.
7. What if I get sick or have an accident?
In our first aid kit, we stock well known brands of medicine
for basic ailments such as flu symptoms, minor cuts and burns, and the
like. In addition, we use medicinal herbs from the garden, such as aloe
vera (sunburn), chamomile (sinus problems), borage (to promote
sweating), and others to make teas, infusions, concoctions, and herbal
baths. In the unlikely event of serious matters, we are accessible
by helicopter to take the patient to world-class medical facilities in
Kota Kinabalu.
We strongly recommend that you purchase sufficient travel insurance.
8. Can I book tours with you?
No. Check www.sabahtourism.com for a list of licensed tour
operators. Ask many questions about specifics before you choose a tour
operator. If your questions are not answered to your full satisfaction,
it may be wise to shop around some more.
9. Can you help us with hotel booking?
We often help our guests with hotel bookings, and make sure they get on the right bus for their onward journey.
10. Can I get a refund for unused services at your country home?
No. Our room rate includes accommodation, breakfast and
dinner. If you choose to skip breakfast, for example, we do not give
refunds.
11. We are a group of five travelers. Can we all stay in one room?
Local fire and health regulations do not allow us to accommodate more than two people in one room. Thank you for your understanding.
12. Do you have any pets?
Yes, we have two adorable dogs, Bonnie and Charlie. If you are allergic to dogs, please re-think your stay with us.
13. Do you accept children, or people with disabilities, or heavy smokers?
Our country home provides a smoke-free environment for
discerning adults who seek quiet enjoyment. Our home is not wheelchair
accessible.
